The Mets will play an intrasquad game on Monday, March 1 at Tradition Field, with Jack Egbert, Clint Everts, Travis Blackley, Jon Niese, Tobi Stoner, R.A. Dickey and Jenrry Mejia all expected to pitch.
In addition, Nelson Figueroa will start the Grapefruit League opener on March 2, against the Braves at Tradition Field, followed by Fernando Nieve on March 3 against the Braves at Disney World.
The video of me talking with Jeff Francoeur had not been working, but now it is… so, click below to check it out:
Original Post at 8:45 am:
Yesterday, Jerry Manuel addressed his team, before they took the field for their first official workout.
“I love it,” Jeff Francoeur told the St. Lucie News, about the day’s events. “You can say what you want about pitchers and catchers reporting, but your first full day is when everybody is here… Now the fun part happens. We get to work, play games and see who is going to head north.”
Here is video of Jenrry Mejia throwing a bullpen session today in St. Lucie:
…i am not sure who the coach is working with him, but he was stressing over and over again to stay balanced, and centered, and ‘drive through his rotation,’ he said this about a dozen times…
…he’s got a serious arm, tremendous fastball, and some sort of off-speed pitch, but he just can’t seem to command his stuff yet… even when throwing casually, he’s a tad wild…
This post featured live streaming of Ike Davis taking a lot of batting practice, including the 40-pitch curveball drill, which hopefully you were able to tune in to watch.
Here is video of him, Daniel Murphy, Mike Jacobs and Fernando Tatis working on drills at first base:
This post will feature my last five updates to Twitter, which I will be using to let readers know where I am going, what I’m working on, and what to next expect on the blog:
Ike Davis looks very fluid in the field at first base, he doesn’t seem antsy and appears confident in his movements, especially on short hops.
He also has a strong arm.
Daniel Murphy is still pretty jumpy, though he still has very good reactions and seems to be putting himself in better position to field the ball.
Mike Jacobs looked like the best of the bunch when picking up throws in the dirt.
By the way, everytime there was a ball in the dirt, Murphy would yell, “Pick it, Wilson,” which I recall Fran Healy saying on air quite often as well.
In a post to his blog for the Bergen Record, Steve Popper writes of Jerry Manuel’s address to the team yesterday morning, before their first official workout.
“Manuel stressed fun as something that the Mets had to recapture, while putting aside the disastrous 2009 campaign,” Popper explains, among other things.
David Lennon of Newsday gives some details about today’s media training session for players and coaches, which uses Jets QB Mark Sanchez as an example… but not in a good way.
Adam Rubin of the Daily News has a variety of news and notes from camp, including this year’s toned-down version of the opposite-field, curveball drill, cut down from 80 to 40 pitches.
For more on the curve-ball drill, read Laurel Phaler’s report for the St. Lucie News.
…i watched a lot of batting practice yesterday, and throughout much of the drill, Howard Johnson repeatedly barked, ‘Line Drive, Line Drive, Line Drive,’ as guys took their final few swings…
By the way, Rubin also says, “Omir Santos or Shawn Riggans could be involved with a trade this spring,” as the team needs to find a home for six catchers in their minor-league system.
Lastly, in the New York Post, Mike Puma breaks down the battle for the final spot on the team’s bench, which could come down to Frank Catalanotto or Mike Jacobs.
Yesterday, the Mets officially announced that McFadden’s will open a 13,000–square foot bar and restaurant at Citi Field, which will include a 200-foot island bar, outdoor patios and batting cages.
For more information, check out McFaddensCitiField.com.
By the way, here is an image, Photoshopped by Rafael E. Taulé, sent in to MetsBlog, showing what the walls in Citi Field would like at night if they were blue:
The Mets players will sit through a media training presentation this morning, presented by Darryl Strawberry, Mookie Wilson and John Franco, all of whom will remain in camp for a few days as guest instructors.
…from what i can gather, the session will take some time, and so the team will probably not emerge on field to start their workout until around 9:30 am or so…
According to the Daily News, the Mets invited Doc Gooden to camp as well, but he declined because his wife is nine months pregnant – though he does have interest in working with them as a part-time consultant in the future.
