Note: The Future of Ike Davis and Murphy

by Matthew Cerrone on March 8th, 2010 at 1:11 pm

Mets 23–year-old 1B Ike Davis is batting .571 with 14 total bases in 14 at-bats in six games this spring.

…i know, it’s so, so tempting… for now, i’m still on the side of sending ike back to the minors, and letting Daniel Murphy keep first base… i still believe murphy will hit around .280 with 40 doubles and more than 80 RBI, if allowed to play the full season… but, in either case, it’s quite clear ike is going to give him a run, and it’s only going to get more and more as the spring and summer move on…

…it’s not a coincidence that ike’s home run from last week now has the record for the most watched video to ever appear on MetsBlog

…from what i can gather, murphy has no problem eventually moving to second base, where, according to people close to him, he thinks he will help the team most in the future… but, for now, he’s at first base… the Mets are excited about Reese Havens, who will play his first full season at second base in the minors this summer… Ruben Tejada still looks to me like a Maicer Izturis type, not necessarily a full-time player… so, who knows, maybe murphy does end up back at second at some point, though i do not see that in the plans any time soon
