Note: Where is Bobby Parnell?

By Matthew Cerrone on Mar 09, 2010, 8:28 am

According to Adam Rubin of the Daily News, Bobby Parnell is not pitching much in games because he is working on developing a cutter.

To read other notes from Mets camp, including an update on Mike Pelfrey’s knee, and John Franco’s travel schedule, check out Rubin’s Twitter feed, here.

Matt, what is your take on Nick Evans? Is it just that Manuel doesn’t like him? A couple of years ago, Evans was thought of higher by the organization than Murphy. Evans was promoted from AA to AAA sooner. He was recalled to the Mets first. If the Mets hadn’t signed Sheffield last year, Evans would have stayed with the club … past the need for a 5th starter.

Were the Mets evaluators wrong? Has Evans not progressed as anticipated? Or is it something else?

I think he’s injured at the moment.

According to Surfing the Mets, Evans has a strained forearm and will be out a week.

Good grief – that’s all he needed!

You’re wrong, Evans lost out to the great Marlon Anderson. who got cut for Sheff.

Manuel doesn’t like Evans. it’s as simple as that.

oh, and he’s strained his forearm or something the other day. He was in on the “Keith teaches First” lesson.

I know Evans isn’t great, but I would of preferred him to platoon with Murphy over resigning Tatis and Evans can play left or right if need be.

He can’t play every position but pitcher, CF, and SS. Also, you want vets in the utility role.

Yes, veterans in the utility role. We have that already with Cora, GMJ, and possibly Catalanotto. I just saw little value in bringing Tatis back. Tatis seems like a nice guy but for me, his shipped has sailed. I would rather see if Evans is going to be something or not and if he shows something and we have no place for him to play, use him in a package to land something of value, be it another draft pick or to fill a need.

Tatis has a ton more value than GMj. Evans instead of GMj – sure. But I’d keep Tatis.

Well I would keep anyone over GMJ. I thought bringing him to the Mets was a waste of time.

I’m not a fan of GMJ, but with the injury history of Pagan and FMart (and now Beltran), I think we needed the additional CF depth, so I liked the pick-up

Nick Evans I think was one of those guys over-hyped with his fast start and the way he performed in his first season. Plus last year he had a dreadful year for Buffalo. And how well can he play first base? Hopefully he can rebound this year in the minors but right now it doesn’t look so good for him.

No he’s just invisible to management’s eye.

Developing a cutter, sounds interesting. I wondering about Parnell myself.

Yes, it does indeed! And, it’s about time!

I think that’s ‘further’ evidence of good things to come this season!

I’m curious as to who thought of him doing that?!

I did hear John Franco – God bless him – was ‘in da house’ as a ‘guest coach’ for a couple more weeks. Could it have been his influence, i wonder?!

Does anyone know what the story with Kiko Calero is? Is he in camp yet?

Dude had all offseason to work on his stuff. I seem to recall that he decided to skip off-season ball for some reason. I don’t think this kid has any real desire to be a top-flight pitcher. He doesn’t even want to start! He’ll never really be more than a middle inning reliever with his attitude.

what if something happened in his life or with his family that precluded him on working on a cutter this offseason?

we really don’t know the reasoning so i think its a bit unfair to state :

“Dude had all offseason to work on his stuff. I seem to recall that he decided to skip off-season ball for some reason. I don’t think this kid has any real desire to be a top-flight pitcher”

With a statement like that, I’d imagine there be something definitive that occured portraying a lazy attitude or a negative attitude…to date, there has nothing of the sort (that I can recall at the moment)

if there has been something, clue me in on it b/c i’d be interested to read about it (and if thats the case, then my bad)

Or, what if the idea ‘just came to him now?’

In any event – better late than never!

From what I recall of a previous interview, there really wasn’t anything pressing – no medical/family issues, he just didnt want to. I don’t fault him for wanting to relax, but it just shows a lack of desire to really be a great pitcher. If he wants to just be a reliever, I have no problem with that. Its just that he has the potential to do more with his talent.
