Note: Fernando Martinez and Center Field

by Matthew Cerrone on March 16th, 2010 at 11:35 am

According to Marty Noble of MLB.com, “Omar Minaya said Monday Fernando Martinez will not be on the Opening Day roster.”

However, Noble adds, “Jerry Manuel clearly indicated Monday Martinez could be the Opening Day center fielder.”

first off, do omar and jerry ever speak to one another… it’s becoming disturbing and also comical how disconnected and opposite their statements tend to be… someone might want to look in to that…

…that being said, i hope omar is correct… to me, pagan earned the job last summer… and, though he does not appear to be the brightest player on the field, i believe his mistakes actually come from a lack confidence… he looks unsure, not stupid… there is a difference… he’s working to be better, more consistent and i think with more playing time he’ll be fine… on the other side, martinez is still so young… i think we forget that… yet, he’s so close to ready… his body has failed him of late, but he’s growing and maturing… so, again, to me, i’d rather see him in Triple-A, with less pressure, where he can just play, be healthy, get in to a routine, keep growing and maturing and gaining confidence, and so, this season, when the Mets need to call on him, and you know they will need to at some point, he’ll be strong, on a roll and ready for action
