Read: McCarron’s Profile of Kiko Calero

by Matthew Cerrone on March 17th, 2010 at 7:58 am

In the Daily News, Anthony McCarron profiles Kiko Calero, who signed with the Mets this Spring, despite interest from 11 other teams.

The 35–year-old Calero was 2-2 with a 1.95 ERA in 67 relief appearances for the Marlins last year, during which he struck out 69 batters in 60 innings, while opponents hit .180 against him.

“I’m fine,” Calero told McCarron, referring to his shoulder.  “Last year was my best year – I pitched 67 games, threw the most innings (60) I had in the big leagues.  I know they want to make sure and that’s why it took so long.  It’s baseball and I have to prove I’m fine.”

Calero will pitch against the Red Sox today in Fort Myers, as will Jenrry Mejia and Bobby Parnell.

i feel parnell is a lock for the bullpen, though i am not sure he should be… the thing is, the bullpen cannot be filled out unless we know who the fifth starter is… in the end, i still believe mejia will be returned to the minor leagues, so the two relievers and the fifth starter will likely come down to some combination of calero, Nelson Figueroa, Jon Niese, Pat Misch and Hisanori Takahashi, and i think you can make a good case for all of them right now
