Buzz: Rockies interested in Joe Beimel

By Matthew Cerrone on Mar 18, 2010, 10:49 am

According to the Denver Post, the Rockies to express interest in free-agent LHP Joe Beimel, now that Huston Street will begin the season on the disabled list.

Last week, Mike Puma of the New York Post said the Mets are interested in Beimel, having offered him a one-year, major-league deal, worth less than the $2 million he earned last season.

The 32–year-old Beimel is 10–9 with a 3.25 ERA in 225 appearances over the last seasons, while pitching for the Dodgers, Nationals and Rockies.

In that time, he has 106 strike outs and 64 walks in 171 innings, during which left-handed batters hit .240 against him, while righties hit .282.

I like Beimel and think he would help out but isn’t our bullpen getting over-crowded at this point? Its looking more and more likely that Meija will be on the team which may mean goodbye to Green. Who goes if we sign Beimel?

if only we gave alex cora Less than 2 million

It’s not like the Mets are having bake sales to cover payroll. If they didn’t offer him more than $2M its because they didn’t think he was worth $2M to the team.

apparantly. But what is the point? They can afford both. With Cora you have a backup MI and all around good guy in the clubhouse. Beimel would be the SECOND LOOGY, not the first, but the second. That spot on theteam is not a high ticket item.

They signed Cora very early in the offseason. Obviously, they miscalculated how bad the market is. Everyone is signing for less.

Yeah, but one could just as easily argue that their decision making process and valuations are suspect. Obviously if they don’t sign him for two mil it’s because they didn’t believe he is worth two mil. I think that’s the logical conclusion. But that doesn’t mean everyone agrees with that decision making process.

As for me, I’d like to see him on this team. We don’t know what to expect from the two imports, Escobar is injured, Mejia IMO should be starting in AAA, Calero could get hurt again, and Parnell could struggle to regain the success he had before Putz went down. Now, I don’t think all those things will happen, but I do think a reliable ML veteran like Beimel could only help solidify that pen. I’d like to see a pen of: K-Rod, Calero, Parnell, Nieve, Beimel, Feliciano, and the winner between Figgy, Iggy, and Takahashi. I think our pen could be an actual strength this year (which only adds to the argument that Mejia should start in AAA, IMO).

Totally agree. The Mets plan this off season seems to be that they have a price (dollars and years) for each player that they are not willing to above. Could they have signed Molina, if they wanted to? Yes. They didn’t feel he was worth the second year. (They ended up with Barajas on a one year deal for less. I think Barajas was the gut Matthew Cerrone wanted anyway.)

Like it or not, that seems to be the strategy. The Mets feel that, today, Beimel is worth less than $2M for one year. Beimel will take it … or he won’t … and the Mets will be OK with either decision.

Why would he WANT to go to ERA unfriendly Denver? If he goes there it has to partially be money motivated. Yeah, the Rockies can be a good team but not usually for pitchers.

That’s a thing of the past. Ever since the humidor, Colorodo has calmed down as an offensive juggernaut of a ballpark. Look at some of the pitching they’ve had the past few years: Cook, Jiminez, De La Rosa, Jeff Francis… It’s not a coincidence that they’ve made the playoffs twice in the past few years. Offensive numbers are no longer suspect and pitchers aren’t as afraid to pitch there.

Why would he want to go there? Ever been to Colorado? It is beautiful.

Although I am not sure about the school system … despite what Mike Hampton has said. :-)

He’ll be making about $2M and living in Colorado. There are worse things.

Plus, he probably reads MetsBlog and see that the Mets will be a 4th place team anyway. :-)

OK really .. why would he go there? I think most players in his situation will take the money, so who ever offers the most …
