Buzz: Mike Jacobs Leads Race For Final Bench Spot

by Michael Baron on March 20th, 2010 at 7:51 am

Adam Rubin, in a post to his blog for the Daily News, says Mike Jacobs is leading the race for the final bench spot with the Mets.

In addition, Rubin says the Mets have asked Jacobs to catch on a limited basis, and he was seen yesterday morning with a bag of catchers equipment in front of his locker.

Jacobs was expected to catch Tobi Stoner‘s bullpen session yesterday.

…as if the Mets didn’t already have a ton of catchers…i wish they were this deep with their pitching staff…Jacobs hasn’t hit much this Spring, but he does have a ton of power potential and given Daniel Murphy has struggled, i wonder if the Mets are holding onto Jacobs in the event Murphy struggles early on…it would make sense to hold onto Jacobs if that were the case rather than throw Ike Davis into the fire…

Prior to the trade that sent Jacobs to Florida for Carlos Delgado, Jacobs was converted from a catcher to a first baseman, and according to Rubin, Jacobs caught bullpen sessions with the Royals last year, but never actually caught during a game.
