Read: Ike Davis’ Reward
According to Marty Noble of MLB.com, Jerry Manuel says he is taking Ike Davis to Kissimmee today to face Astros ace Roy Oswalt as a reward for hitting a game-tying solo home run in the ninth inning of yesterday’s 6-5 loss to the Cardinals.
…i am absolutely thrilled Ike has done so well this Spring…i think it would be unfair for me to say he hasn’t played himself into consideration for the opening day roster, and arguably even the starting first base job, but i just think, like i think with Jenrry Mejia, it’s too soon for him and no matter what, both should go to Triple-A…i just think these guys need time in the minors to get more professional experience, hone their skills, and enjoy some success down there before being thrown into the fire in New York…i think between Davis, Mejia and Fernando Martinez, the Mets have a unique opportunity to grow three very special players all at once, and combining them with David Wright and Jose Reyes, there is the chance to create a tremendous core group of players for a real long time, provided they extend both Wright and Reyes…
Davis made his first appearance in five days yesterday, and in 24 at bats this Spring, he is hitting .500 with three home runs and 10 RBI with three walks and seven strikeouts.
