News: Jose Reyes to Return to PSL Tomorrow

By Michael Baron on Mar 23, 2010, 12:51 pm

According to David Lennon of Newsday, Omar Minaya told reporters that Jose Reyes will resume baseball activities tomorrow.

“Today is a good day,” Minaya said.

According to SNY, Minaya said, “Doctors are fully confident that the thyroid is taken care of.”

Minaya did not rule out the possibility of Reyes returning to the Mets’ lineup by Opening Day.

Original Post at 12:10 pm:

Jose Reyes has been cleared by doctors to resume baseball activities, the Mets announced today.

…this is great news…

…i think the next question is how long he will need to get back into playing shape…

His thyroid levels have returned to normal, he is on his way back to Tradition Field, and will hopefully be in camp tomorrow.

      Grrrrrrreeat news!!!
Assuming there are no setbacks there’s no reason he can’t start opening day!!!!!!!
I guess this ends all the Tejada/Cora debate. Thankfully.
Remember…chicken and veggies, chicken and veggies….Stay away from seafood Jose!!!

Not only is it great news for the Mets, it is great news for my fantasy team.

I was so mocked for taking him during the draft, that I actually refused to take a back-up SS after that, just to show some bravado! Now I am glad I don’t have to eat crow, or at least not for long!!!

Because today is March 23rd, and Jose hasn’t played. If he injures his leg again, we are back to square 1. Let Jose get back slowly and if he gets back by the second or third week in April, I think that’s great.
Don’t push him and have a leg injury is what I’m saying.
Once he is ready, a full season of a healthy Jose Reyes is exactly what these Mets need.

He shouldn’t need any time off at all. I just hope he remembers it was his legs that were bothering him before his thyroid and he doesn’t push himself too hard over the next 2 weeks

He still has two weeks to get ready for opening day. Even if he does not play opening day, he should be ready by the second week of the season.

Why not DH him a couple of games at least so he can get his timing down.

I hope to hear Howie Rose say “Batting 3rd…and playin shortstop, number 7, JOSE REYES!” during Opening Day introuctions

That being said, I’m going to remain cautious. I don’t know much about thyroids but it seems like it could come back at any time. Hopefully I am wrong.

    Welcome back Jose!!!

Guys… this is going to sound weird and like trying to grasp for silver linings.. but in all honesty… the injury last year has now paid off. Because he was rehabbing so hard during the off season right up to spring training he was in exceptional shape… even for him. So missing these 3 weeks are going to take less of a toll than they would have if it was a normal spring for him.

I have a feeling we will be seeing #7 in the linuep opening day!

I was thinking the same thing. I don’t want to just throw out a guess about how long it will take him but I don’t think Reyes is ever to far from game shape at any point in the season. He is one of those super hyperactive, adhd, lightning fast metabolism guys who lose weight sleeping.

Yeah…I got giddy. I never get giddy. Ive been waiting for this day for 3 weeks now and its finally come. Let say this. This tells me that he had a level drawn last Monday and it was clean. They waited another week and yesterday they drew another level and it was clean. That’s why they cleared him it has to be. We finally have our Jose back. 2 weeks to go…I say a week for stretching and getting into shape and he will have 1 week of games and be there opening day. So awesome..it made my day.

Marty Noble says the chances of being ready for Opening Day are “remote” but Marty is always pessimistic.

Even if he’s not, no need to start Tejada’s clock. Adams will probably be on the roster for a couple days before Reyes comes in.

I just don’t get this… As long as Reyes isn’t going to hurt himself (meaning he’s strtched out enough), he’s in better shape sitting out on his backside for three weeks than lots of guys who play around the league. He’ll be there opening day, heck, he’d be there in today’s game if he was safely stretched out and warmed up.

I don’t get the “he might be ready”. He was already playing baseball earlier this Spring, and how long would it take him to get to a level where he is at least as productive as Alex Cora? If you ask me, he needs 2-3 days to get up to speed.

    • hotcorner5
      Mar 23, 2010, 1:00 pm at 1:00 pm #

i agree… he played in that first intrasquad game and was ready to play in a real game before they caught the thyroid issue. he can’t possibly be that far behind everyone else. and i don’t care if he needs a week to get acclimated… we need him in the opening day line up as long as he’s physically healthy.

all of a sudden the lineup looks MUCH better. Not getting my hopes up too much but if Jose can make it for opening day he can bat 3rd with Pagan leading off no?

Then Beltran back in May and Reyes moves back up to the lead off spot

I rather see Tejada start in AAA and tear it up with Davis,Thole, Martinez

I also am hoping Carter makes it ahead of Jacobs but if not man Buffalo looks alot better. Last year I went to a game was like wow this team stinks, Mets have crap for callups. This year I feel if an injury occurs they have options

    • Hodges14
      Mar 23, 2010, 2:43 pm at 2:43 pm #

Not sure Tejada is a tear it up kind of guy hahaha… he seems to be more leather than wood. This is really great news though… you would think in 2 weeks he can be close enough to 100% to play on opening day.

  35. Big Dirty

He WILL be back Opening Day!! Gauranteed. With around 2 weeks to go till opening day, Jose should be able to get back into shape. I dont think he has gained 20 lbs, or forgotten to throw, catch or run, The only problem might be his bat. I think he will probably just have to get up to speed during the season as was the case any since he was out the majority of last year.

It’s impossible for me to imagine that after 2 weeks that they are going to feel like he needs more time. Barring a setback (which unfortunately is probably likely with this team), he’s in the opening day lineup. Back to the leadoff vs 3rd debate, which is much more fun to have than Cora vs. Tejada.

This is amazing lol. I had my fantasy draft last night and got Jose in the 10th round lol. I don’t think he will need that long to get back into shape since he was only resting about 2 weeks. I think he will be ready for opening day, but if not and he misses say one or two weeks I can live with that and I am sure the Mets can.

Most excellent news — except if you’re the likes of Francessa, Madden or Sherman who now have one less bullet to try to shoot the Mets with.

I remember when the news broke Reyes would be out 2 to 8 weeks, some Mets fans were ready to jump off the bridge and predicted Jose would be out till the All-Star break. I don’t think the Mets will have the bad luck they had last year. Hopefully that bad luck migrates over to the Phillies and Braves. It’s their turn.
