Buzz: 60 Percent Chance Mejia is in Bullpen
In a post to his new, shiny blog for ESPN New York, Adam Rubin says a team insider told him there is a 60 percent chance Jenrry Mejia will be on the Opening Day roster.
…fine… fine… whatever… i still think he should stay in the minors and keeping working on his pitches, command and harnessing his potential to be a dominant starter… but, i get it… he might be the best relief pitcher they have… fine… i’ll deal with it and hope for the best… but, if the Mets are actually going to do this, if this is going to be his job, if the Mets truly think he’s going to be awesome in this role, then put him in Francisco Rodriguez’s pocket and start grooming him to be the team’s next closer right now and don’t look back… in other words: do… not… jerk… him… around…
Rubin also believes Pedro Feliciano, Ryota Igarashi, Hisanori Takahashi and Fernando Nieve are likely to join Rodriguez in the bullpen – though, ‘nothing is set in stone.’
Yesterday, Omar Minaya told WFAN the plan is to have two left-handed pitchers and five righties in the bullpen, none of which are likely to be a designated set-up man.
…feliciano and takahashi are both lefties… so, there’s the two lefties… it’s clear Raul Valdes is turning heads… but, it seems that final spot will go to a righty, with the team choosing between Sean Green and Kiko Calero… or, i guess the Mets could add valdes, and swap out one of the other righties, say mejia or igarashi, for calero… the thing is, calero has to be out there… he is the most qualified to step up and take that set-up job, and do it well… so, yeah, i have no idea what they’re going to do, or should do… and i don’t think the team knows yet, either…
