The Least You Should Know:
- The Mets were down 6–1 in the seventh inning, rallied to tie it in the eighth, thanks in part to a balk – which, let’s be honest, wasn’t a walk – then lost in the 10th.
- John Maine let up four runs and eight hits in five innings.
- Jenrry Mejia made his major-league debut, facing six batters in relief of Maine, and let up three hits and a run in the sixth inning. Ruben Tejada made his debut, as well, grounding out as a pinch hitter.
The Marlins walked nine batters.
…i liked the team’s approach at the plate… they were patient, but also swung from their heels when necessary… the problem wasn’t getting on base, it was coming up with the big hit…
Following the game, Jerry Manuel told reporters that Maine left pitches up in the zone, though he was able to get his secondary pitches over for strikes, which the Marlins put in play.
…manuel isn’t concerned in maine’s lack of velocity, but i am… also, he was putting the ball up on a tee, basically, as he got knocked around by Hanley Ramirez and Jorge Cantu… he is still getting out in front of the ball, and he’s all over the place, and these guys were just waiting on him… he has GOT to slow down…
…by the way, i wouldn’t mind seeing the Mets knock down some of these fish, who crowd the plate and take some HUGE cuts… they look way, way too comfortable in the batter’s box…
Takahashi pitched to four batters, threw 19 pitches, 10 of which were strikes, though he let up two hits, walked a batter and allowed the winning run to score.
…the Marlins swing the bats, so it’s necessary to move the ball in and around the strike zone… takahashi did not… and the Marlins put the ball in play…
Mets had a chance to take the lead in the eighth, with the bases loaded and David Wright at home, Fernando Tatis rushed home on a pass ball and was thrown out at the plate. Jerry Manuel told reporters after the game that Tatis ‘misread the situation.’
…tatis, a veteran, should know better than to make that move, unless he is 100 percent certain he can make it… at this point in his career, he shouldn’t misread a play like that…
Wright stole second base, with one out and the game tied in the ninth inning, so the Marlins intentionally walked Jason Bay to pitch to Gary Matthews Jr., who grounded out to end the inning.
…this is a game the Mets should have won… i know, i know, you can’t win them all, and i’m happy with the fight and energy the team had… but, this is one the Mets should have won… and, this is the type of game, when tight in a pennant race in September, the Mets will wish they had back, and didn’t let the Marlins off the hook…
The Mets conclude their three-game series with the Marlins tomorrow night in Citi Field at 7 pm, with Jon Niese taking on Nate Robertson.
