Post Game: Mets 8, Nationals 2

By Michael Baron on Apr 09, 2010, 10:19 pm

The Mets (2-2) defeated the Nationals (1-3) by the score of 8-2 tonight at Citi Field.

For a full recap and box score, check out SNY.tv here.

The Least You Should Know:

  • Mike Pelfrey pitched well for the Mets, allowing two runs and four hits in six innings.
  • Alex Cora made two great defensive plays at second base tonight – one saving a run in the third inning and an acrobatic play in the fifth on a bunt attempt by Willie Harris.
  • The Mets got a pair of home runs from both Rod Barajas and Jeff Francoeur.
  • Hisanori Takahashi and Fernando Nieve were impressive again, both turning in scoreless efforts.
  • The Mets hit four home runs tonight, the first time they have ever done so at Citi Field.
  • Ruben Tejada got his first major league base hit in the eighth inning.
  • Jason Bay went 1 for 4 tonight, and struck out three times.

…the pitching tonight was great overall, but i think most importantly, Pelfrey managed to stay composed when he got in trouble, which helped him avoid damage…he started out throwing first pitch strikes to the first seven batters he faced, which helped his tempo and efficiency during the early part of the game…

Game Ball:

Goes to Rod Barajas for his two home runs, his second one giving the Mets the lead for good.

Up Next:

Jose Reyes makes his long awaited return tomorrow afternoon against the Nationals at Citi Field, with Oliver Perez facing John Lannan. Game time is 1:10 pm.

Are you kidding? Matt wrote this BEFORE the game. He’s that good.

You’ve obviously never seen a newsroom in the modern day. The article gets written during the game, and adjusted on the fly. As much as fans love big comebacks, reporters and editors hate them.

I gotta say, the game ball should go to Pelfrey. He pitched great.

Nice game! It was against the Nats, but I’ll certainly take it. Seeing the Mets get 4 hr’s at Citi. Great!

No reason for the Mets not to sweep.

uh yeah…… its called oliver perez……………. if we win tommorrow, with santana going sunday and reyes in the lineup then i say yeah, no reason why not………but we need to get through tommorrow with bozo the clown pitching

You’re right. I don’t trust Ollie P either. However, I’m also looking at who were facing. Mets hit John Lannan pretty well. So if the offense shows up, with Reyes in the lineup. We can produce enough runs to get passed Ollie’s inevitable mistakes.

Good game and comments. My additional thoughts:
    1. Though Jacobs’ struggles continue at the plate, he has played a very good 1B throughout ST and into the season.
    2. David Wright had the hardest hit ball I have ever seen not clear a fence.

And good job by Pagan going 1st to 3rd on the throw home after having to stop on his way to second to let the ground ball pass. Ended up scoring and giving David Wright an RBI.

Jacobs played good defense for a guy who needs Tatis as a defensive replacement huh ..

    Matt—

I’d give another Game Ball to Pelf—he was solid tonight!

Did you see his breaking ball? Yikes. If he can throw that pitch with consistency, he’s definitely going to be more affective in the rotation.

        ABNYC7—

Yes, that’s the key with Pelf (and Maine and even Ollie): consistency.

I know it was just the Nats, but if Pelf can pitch can keep pitching like this, he’s going to be tough to hit.

    Barajas>Molina

Yeah, I said it. He only cost the Mets 1 million, compared to that 12 mill Molina was asking for. Finally going cheap paid off….

Cheap as far as signing Barajas for the 1 million, instead of Molina for 12 million. I’m well aware of the Mets payroll.

Great game. Tonight was the night when everything clicked. The pitching was better than I could’ve imagined and Frenchy and Barajas crushed the ball. Cora was unbelievable at second. The differience in tonight’s game was unexpected heros. If different people can step up like this throughout the summer, it could be a special year.

I totally agree with you and ABNYC. Barajas was a steal at 1 million compared to Benjie. Barajas is no burner but Benjie runs slower than a snail on a salt bed and is not worth the extra year he wanted. Listen Barajas is going to strike out a ton, he’s going to hit for a low OBP and batting average but he’s a threat for the long ball every time he comes to the plate which is something the Mets have not had at the catching position since Castro was traded. The pitching was outstanding and listen Takahashi, Nieve, Igarashi, K-rod, Feliciano, and Mejia can make for a potentially dominant pen if things go right. Honestly, I think they might DL Castillo to give him a break early keep Cora at second which is where he should be playing anyway and keep Tejada around as insurance. He looks great and man what an arm. Hey there 2-2 go for 3-2 tomorrow night lets see if Ollie is going to be our old funky maddeningly inconsistent yet sometimes dominant Ollie or if Ollie is the watered down version I saw in spring training who was throwing lolipops to guys. We’ll see tomorrow at 1.

Frenchy is now well on his way to hitting 27… no? It was nice to see 4 HR and almost a 5th from Wright without a team as powerful as the Nats hitting any.

Pelf kept the ball DOWN for the most part. If he can do that consistently, he can pitch to contact and be successful. And if he can throw that splitter as well as he threw it tonight, he’ll generate a lot more swings and misses, and presumably a lot more Ks. Impressive stuff from Pelf tonight.

    Nieve was impressive again.

Alex Cora is a solid ball player. Good to have him on this team.

And Jeff Francoeur makes me smile. Not as much as Reyes does, but they both have very infectious smiles.

Keep it up boys. Lets go Mets.

I’d be thrilled. He has the right attitude, work ethic and it would be a great success story after Atlanta treated him like garbage.

I predicted in the off season 280/20/80.

It’s WAY early, but I’d say he’s a lock for these numbers. I’d love to silence some of the Frenchie Doubters.

BEST was Pelf, looking better than I’ve EVER seen him.

Might it be the season won’t su*k?

      I am a frency doubter.
20-80 280 would make him a way below average of’er because he never walks. He has walked twice this year and he was supposed to work on things with hojo. If he can learn to walk 70 times a year (very doubtful) then fine. But with 20 walks, those #s are not enough

Ahhhhhh. That game was a breath of fresh air. I miss homeruns, that was fun and yes you’re all right Pelf can be dominant. Not saying he was tonight, he was solid, but now I can see why he can really be a dominant pitcher with his secondary and tertiary pitches. Aww Yeaaa.
    Jose, Jose, Jose, Jose.

I’ll be there tommorow to welcome are boy back.

I liked the comment by Keith about the bench looking more cohesive.

Ike going yard tonight too. Can we stop wasting him down in AAA and bring him up already!? Can he really be any worse then Jacobs/Tatis??

If we can get Reyes and Beltran back, and then have Ike up, along with everyone else staying healthy, man, that could be a pretty sick lineup.

It might be that an early series against the Nats is exactly what this rotation needs.

The Nats have pop, but offensively we should be able to get on top of whomever they have on the mound.

Pelfrey and Perez can gain – perhaps Pelf already has – a lot of confidence out of a strong early outing at Citi Field.

Great game to watch, well done all – particularly Barajas and Francouer.

Didn’t get to see the game but from the boxscore (and I realize it is only one game) it is so refreshing to see the Mets get a big win without DW or JB having to play the hero. All last season it seemed the team couldn’t win unless the team’s stars won the game for them.
