Note: on the Ninth Inning Today
In the ninth inning of today’s 4-3 loss to the Nationals, Jose Reyes led off the inning with a single, and with Alex Cora at bat with nobody out, Cora sacrificed Reyes to second.
The inning, and the game ended on an amazing catch by Willie Harris off the bat of Rod Barajas, which, if he hadn’t made that catch, the Mets would have likely won the game on that hit, but the Mets left the bases loaded with Reyes at third.
…i’ve received a lot of emails asking why Reyes didn’t attempt to steal, and then have Cora sacrifice him to third, and i think it’s a fair argument…i’m assuming it has to do with Reyes appearing rusty today, although he normally steals bases at his own discretion…the issue with taking that chance is they run the risk of losing the base runner, and then Cora is up with one out and nobody on with the heart of the batting order to follow…personally, i was wondering why the Mets didn’t send Reyes in that situation, and just take the risk, because his legs and his speed are the greatest part of his game, and it would have been a worthy gamble to try and get him into scoring position with nobody out…
