- Johan Santana allowed a grand slam in the first inning to Josh Willingham, setting the tone early for the Nationals, but he managed to get through five innings despite the sub-par effort.
- The Mets offense staggered badly against former Met Livan Hernandez, who went seven innings, scattered five hits and walked three.
- Coming into today’s game, the Mets were hitting .205 with runners in scoring position, and they went 1 for 9 in those situations today.
- Gary Matthews Jr. came up four times with two outs and runners in scoring position, and went 0 for 4.
- Raul Valdes made his Major League debut this afternoon for the Mets and turned in two scoreless innings, showing good movement on his off-speed pitches.
- Ryota Igarashi contributed a scoreless inning of relief, as the Mets bullpen hasn’t allowed a run in it’s 12 2/3 innings.
- Mike Jacobs broke a 1 for 13 slump with a long two run home run in the eighth inning off of Brian Bruney, but is just 2 for 15 on the season.
- In the top of the ninth inning, Francisco Rodriguez hit Willie Harris with a pitch, and while no punches were thrown, the benches cleared when the two shared some words.
…i was really concerned today about Santana…his velocity was in the upper 80s for most of the afternoon, which was way too close to the velocity of his changeup, making both very hittable…
…the other thing which is really troubling is this team seems to be consistently out-played by their opponent…whether it’s the Nationals or the Marlins the opposition just seems to be in a better position on the field to make plays against the Mets both offensively and defensively…there also doesn’t seem to be too many ways this team can score runs right now, and they haven’t put themselves in a position to score too many runs as they don’t get themselves into hitters counts, and they don’t ever seem to hit and run and try to make their own breaks, and that’s going to have to change in order for them to get going…yes, it’s only been six games, but this is awfully familiar…
