News: Mike Jacobs DFA’d, Tobi Stoner Called Up

by Michael Baron on April 18th, 2010 at 6:30 pm

According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, Jerry Manuel says the Mets will make a decision about promoting Ike Davis as soon as their bullpen situation is worked out.

…i don’t see this going any other way right now, unless they decide to take a chance on Chris Carter‘s glove to give Davis more time…as David Lennon of Newsday pointed out here, why not simply option Jacobs to the minors, rather than DFA him if they aren’t going to promote Davis or Carter, as this move opens up a roster spot for one of them…from a defensive standpoint, Carter isn’t exactly the prettiest option but at the same time, one of the reasons the Mets decided to keep Davis in the minors was to hone his defensive skills…

…the issue the Mets have is with Daniel Murphy out, they’re now left with Fernando Tatis who has played a total of 50 games at first base during his career, and Chris Carter has primarily served as either an outfielder or designated hitter at Buffalo to allow Davis to play first base…while i think more time is necessary for him to develop in the minors, Davis crushing the ball down there, and i think the Mets have very little choice at this point but to bring him up now that they’ve eliminated Jacobs as an option, as disappointing as he was…

Update, 4:39 pm:

The Mets have designated Mike Jacobs for assignment to make room for Tobi Stoner on their roster.

…i thought it was a great move to bring Jacobs to camp to see what he could do, and it just didn’t work out…unfortunately, he was forced into a primary role with this team, and he just didn’t hit at all…hopefully things turn around for him at some point…

…my next question is, who do they replace Stoner with when they send him back to the minors, as Murphy doesn’t appear to be ready…i think Ike Davis may want to go out and buy himself a nice suit tomorrow…

Jacobs still has an option left on his contract, and so the possibility remains he could accept an assignment in the minor leagues, but Jacobs told reporters he will not go to the minors and sit on the bench.

…so, if they want to keep Jacobs they need to open the first base position up for him at Buffalo, although they could promote Chris Carter and make Jacobs their designated hitter…but i don’t think the Mets need to do their best to keep Jacobs in their system at the moment…
