Note: Steve Phillips on Mid-Season Replacements

by Matthew Cerrone on May 17th, 2010 at 4:43 pm

Today, in his regularly-scheduled, weekly interview on WFAN, Steve Phillips was asked by Mike Francesa if he believes the Mets should replace Jerry Manuel with Bobby Valentine.

slick, mike… very slick… naturally, phillips dodged the question, saying he shouldn’t answer that, but he did make an interesting point:

Phillips said no team is likely to hire from outside when replacing a manager during the season because they’re obligated to go through an extensive interview process, or be fined, and there is not normally enough time for that – and so the Mets are far, far more likely to hire from within, such as a Bob Melvin or Wally Backman, which is probably why these men were hired in the off season.
