Apparently, Mike Francesa just ripped me apart on WFAN, which is hilariously awesome – I think it had something to do with my post about Mike Pelfrey this morning.
It’s funny, I haven’t mentioned him on this blog in quite a while, so I can’t imagine what I did to warrant such a strong reaction.
Sadly, I wasn’t listening, so I didn’t get to hear what he said.
Figures, I listen to him every day for a decade and the one time I tune out, he rips me up.
Did he actually say I look like I’m 12 year old? Way to keep it classy, Mike… and yet, I’m oddly flattered and appreciative of him mentioning my blog on his show. Thanks for the plug, buddy.
Anyway, if you heard the show, what exactly did he say? Or, even better, if you happen to be DVR’ing the broadcast on YES, if there is way to flip me the audio, send it over.

Mike Francessa insulting you personally is almost like an honor. I can’t believe he would rip a blogger… you would think these old media guys would avoid confrontation rather than try to take the new school head on. A match up they are most certainly losing. I wasn’t listening, but I’d love to hear what he had to say. I don’t see how one could rip you for laying down an honest fan’s opinion on Pelf.

The “bath” comment was not that Matt looks dirty (a little bit) but that Matt is a youngster and of course youngsters take baths, and could not possibly be informed. Funny thing is, a caller got through, and Francesa dismissed his comment as a “throwaway”. He claimed he had no idea who Matt Cerrone was.

There is no high road. No reason to call in just so Francesa can mouth off more about blogs not being deserved or not worthwhile.
Tell him to go ask Heyman questions that have been answered and reported on blogs hours before, or to give us the Mets lineup hours after the Mets themselves have emailed it to Matt and other bloggers directly who, like many beat reporters, have already tweeted it.

Calling in would be a huge mistake. How many times have we heard Francessa yelling at and cutting off a caller that is entirely correct? It’s very frustrating, and he would never give Matt a chance to speak. He would just rant about how Matt is a nobody and how he has no right to be proud of any professional baseball player, etc.
He’s MUCH BETTER OFF hammering back at Mike in his blog. Why? Lots of people read metsblog AND listen to WFAN. Matt’s argument would be heard there. As for those who only listen to WFAN, Mike’s rants do no damage there.
Side note: Nothing like the tired, heavy breathing we often hear from Francessa on his microphone as he struggles to get comfortable in his studio.

It was funny, I think it was yesterday when a caller called in and Mike basically was trying to say how optimistic of a person he is… HA! I find Mike entertaining, and he makes a lot of great points but he is a nasty SOB and as much as baseball is part of my life I would be caught dead calling into his show… mainly because I KNOW Id get into an arguement with him and blow up.
Matt you really do a fantastic job, and this blog is one of the best things that have happend to the Mets in a while; you’ve found a way to unite Met fans and make our bond that much stronger. Not only do the fans appreciate this but I am sure the players do as well. Mike keep up the great freaking job!

Great news Matt, if nothing else that may get additional WFAN listeners to your site. Most certainly, among any people who currently read your site, it wont mean a hill of beans. No one going to stop reading metsblog.com simply because Francessa ripped you.
It’s abundantly obvious that this is merely a jealousy driven comment by Francessa. He is trying to paint a picture of being someone who can care less what a peon like you thinks, but clearly he cares – which is why he was on your site to begin with. He doesn’t like the idea of you being “proud” of Pelfrey, since that insinuates (to some) that you are in some way Mike’s mentor (or even peer). Most readers probably did not take your comments that way … and we know exactly what you mean. As a fan, you are proud of your player.
Something tells me if Ed Coleman, who realistically holds no more clout than you do as the owner of Metsblog.com made the same comments, Francess would have never noticed.
Finally, this whole situation reminds me of an old childrens book I had growing up, about dinosaurs. One of the last pages had a picture of a T-Rex. In desperation, on the brink of starvation, it has chased a small animal until the T-Rex had actually gotten it’s head stuck in between two trees. It was thrashing around angrily, trapped, and dying.
Mike Francessa reminds me of that T-Rex. An animal (AM Radio talk show host) on the verge of extinction, used to being the dominant kind of the landscape, suddenly outpaced and outwitted by smaller, nimbler mammals, unable to adapt to changing climate.
Who reads blogs? How about every decent sports journalist these days? How about most fans under the age of 40 (and almost all fans under the age of 30)?
A better question might be: Who relies on Mike Francessa as their primary source of information anymore?

Nothing wrong at all with being “proud” of players on your team. I’m proud of players all the time, including some that are older than me. I’m proud of my parents when they do something positive. I’m proud of the President of the United States when he does something I approve of (any president, not just the current one).

Not going to work. I will always read metsblog, but I’m not going to be listening to Mike say a word.
In response to a caller he just said it was an age thing, that Matt looks younger than Pelf so how could he be “proud” of him since that’s the kind of thing a teacher says about a pupil. If that’s the only context in which Mike has every heard of someone being proud of someone else, that says a lot.
Matt, For whatever reason, MF is a bitter man. I’d blow this off, and not draw more attention to him. The bottom line is that, no matter what the circumstance, he belittles anything & anyone associated with the Mets, directly or indirectly. You should stop giving him press by saying you watch him; perhaps stop watching him altogether! He’s simply not that good. Through the years, he has gotten lazy on all topics beyond the Bronx and his Giants and Saint Tuna.

Francesa reminds me of Pete Franklin. If any of you are old enough to remember hium, Pete Franklin was the old man in the afternoons when WFAN was still on 1050 before they took over 660 am in the late 80′s. Franklin used to insult his listeners and only talk to the sycophants who called to kiss his a**. He was a know it all who had never played professional sports and had a problem with regular people who were just fans and calling to express their opinions. Sound like anyone we know? Matt, if you organize a boycott, or ask your readers to listen to Michael Kay, im there. If I’m going to listen to a yankee fan in the afternoon, i might as well listen to a yankee fan who doesnt insult met fans.
