News: Players Disgusted with Oliver Perez
According to a report from Mike Puma in the New York Post, “two disgusted Mets players said yesterday it’s time management drew a line in the sand with the putrid lefty.”
…i think you add about million fans to the same category…
“You tell him you go to Triple-A or that’s it, you are finished,” an anonymous player told Puma.
Multiple reports say the team has repeatedly asked Perez to accept an assignment to Triple-A Buffalo, but he has refused.
… basically, according to terms negotiated in the CBA, players in perez’s contractual situation with his level of service time are under no obligation to accept a minor league assignment… the team can kick, scream and lobby all it wants… it’s ollie’s call… the Mets can either waive him, in hopes that some team picks him up, which will NEVER happen because of his contract, or they can cut him and eat the $20 million left on his deal, which they’re going to end up paying any way, OR try to find a team with a similarly-awful contract and player and swap them out… or, hope ollie comes to his senses and accepts his assignment to Buffalo…
Following last night’s game, a reporter told Perez that teammates have said he should go to the minor leagues – naturally, Perez was defensive, asking, “Who? Who said that?”
Yesterday on SNY, Kevin Burkhardt said Perez had contacted free-agent Pedro Martinez for advice.
In a blog post for WFAN.com, radio announcer Howie Rose writes of Perez, “His behavior towards his employers and his teammates has morphed from desultory to criminal. He is stealing money, not because of his poor performance, but because he continues to refuse the Mets’ request to go down to the minor leagues to try and get straightened out.”
…i am annoyed with ollie, obviously… but, let’s not forget the reason the Mets are in this situation right now is because Omar Minaya was so desperate for a starting pitcher who gave ollie this contract, which never made sense… the kid had no track record to warrant that level commitment… and now the Mets are suffering for it…
