Questions: What is an Extended Spring Training Game?
Basically, it’s like a pick-up game or a scrimmage between rehabbing players and minor leaguers at the team’s Spring Training complex in St. Lucie, during which no records are kept, there are no umpires and the rules are rather loose, i.e., if Carlos Beltran wants another pitch, despite just getting four balls in his at bat, so be it, he gets another pitch, or if Beltran wants nine at bats, he gets nine at bats… and so on.
Frankly, it is very much like regular Spring Training, hence the name, with days full of workouts, fielding and hitting drills, and scrimmages – kind of like the days in February between Pitchers and Catchers and Grapefruit League games.
