Heyman: on Dan Haren, Roy Oswalt and Ted Lilly

by Michael Baron on July 16th, 2010 at 2:40 pm

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the asking price continues to be very high for Diamondbacks RHP Dan Haren.

Heyman says Diamondbacks GM, and former Met Jerry DiPoto wants two starting pitchers and bullpen help in exchange for Haren.

…in other words, i don’t think the Diamondbacks are inclined to move Haren…i don’t think the Mets are in any sort of position to meet those demands, considering they are looking to add a piece to the existing rotation and potentially add a piece to the bullpen, not subtract from that…

Regarding Roy Oswalt, Heyman says no team appears to be willing to take on the remaining $25 million owed to him over the next year and a half, and there is the possibility that Oswalt would want his 2012 club option, priced at $16 million, picked up as part of him waiving his no-trade clause to leave Houston.

…in addition to that, from what i understand, the cost in talent going to Houston is also an issue for interested teams…it’s almost as if Oswalt requested a trade, but isn’t in a hurry to leave, considering he only wants to play for a few teams and has his own contractual demands…

Finally, regarding Ted Lilly, Heyman says “A few GMs said they believe the Mets make the most sense. And they probably do…”

…given that it’s unlikely the Mets have the ability or desire to deal for either Oswalt or Haren, i think Lilly is the most realistic bet to be acquired, although it’s still not clear what the asking price is for Lilly

Lilly, who projects to be a Type A Free Agent this winter, is in the final year of a four year, $40 million contract with a 2010 base salary of $12 million.
