According to SNY producer Matt Dunn, Jason Bay has been scratched from tonight’s lineup with a mild concussion.
He will be re-evaluated again in two to three days.
The injury occurred when Bay crashed in to the outfield wall in Los Angeles, the Mets told reporters today, though he did not feel symptoms until on the flight to New York.

Maybe this will knock the slump out of him like in the great film “Rookie of the Year”…
DAYUM!
Ryan Church all over again.
Yep. And tomorrow we find out he’s actually had the concussion since April, after getting hit with a Gary Matthews Jr liner in batting practice!
LOL, I LOVE MY TEAM!!
Funny how things play out… He’s about to come and face the Mets fans and he’ll probably be out for the homestand.
Well this is good news.
I think the whole team has a concussion. Especially Beltran. he seems to be playing in daz.
Not tonight.
I think the whole team has a concussion. Especially Beltran. he seems to be playing in daze.
Mets Medical Staff… Take 3!
Just keeps getting better and better….
This is like some kind of Family Guy episode, seriously is Seth Macfarlane writing the script for this season.
To add on that. Jerry is suspended for tonight’s game for bumping into a ump.
Coincidence?
Did Jerry give the ump a concussion?
Well. That’s too bad. Hope he gets back soon. I am of course extremely disappointed with his offensive numbers this season, but I keep holding out hope that he will have a least one little hot streak and tear it up for a few weeks.
Lol, on this team, hot streaks last games, not weeks.
DAYUM NATURE! YOU SCARY!
No Bay No Jerry tonight = win
Wow, just wow. Get well soon Bay.
Uhm….he played since getting clocked.
Does anyone know if concussion syndromes take multiple days to develop?
Altitude changes can have an effect. It’s weird, especially since he said he didn’t hit his head on the wall after the game.
I suspect that the way he hit jarred his head pretty good and he has probably had a headache for a couple days and the change in altitude amplified it.
Weird you ask that because I suffered a concussion 2 weeks ago today and didn’t start feeling the symptoms until the following Sunday…it has only recently gotten better but the syndromes range from bad to excruciating. Splitting headaches, dizziness, nausea, etc., and it’s all at once.
Get well soon J Bay.
sure, also could have been the pressure differences of being on the airplane could have caused the appearance of some symptoms. Either way, they’re probably being overly cautious with him, which is probably for the best, he needs to clear him head regardless.
It’s probably he felt a bit off after the crash and the plane really messed things up. But with Dr.’s Howard, Fine and Howard you never know.
Nice 3 Stooges reference. LOL!
Bay being gone for an extended period of time isnt a loss… he provides no protection in the lineup and has shown no signs of being a power hitter (which is why we obtained him)… If he was down for the entire rest of the season I wouldnt care… This is yet another case of a player signing a big contract and being a total bust his 1st season with the new team… 2010 is a lost year for Bay.. The Mets should hope he rebounds in 2011, because are far as 2010 is concerned this is the most you’re going to get out of him.. Im 100% convinced of it!
When the best news you get is that your big winter acquisition can’t play…
Will he be put on the DL retroactive to April 5?
At least he’s a different animal than Ryan Church.
Bay with a concussion can manage better than Jerry.
In Jerry’s defense, he can hit right now better than Bay.
Head injuries are nothing to laugh at.
Bike helmets are a must nowadays.
Hope Bay can rest up and come back strong.
Are they sure it didn’t happen in Spring Training ?
Get better soon Jason!!
I wonder if this is why Francoeur is still on the team? They said he was insurance for Beltran. oh really? When did mgmt, know Bay was feeling lousy? Were they waiting for some conclusive doctor’s report?
This also isn’t Ryan Church all over again. They already knew Church had a concussion and put him on the plane to Denver, that was dumb. This seems different. Maybe it’s time the players wear helmets in the outfield too?
this team is like a will ferrell comedy version of a baseball team except it’s real
Maybe he’ll wake out a better player and forget he was ever in a slump .. one can only hope
Above all else, best wishes to Jason Bay for a healthy recovery.
Maybe he’s secretly had this concussion all season long?
I got hit in the head with a dodge ball in 1988, and I didn’t feel the effects until the recent ny mets road trip…
That sounds like that poisonous mushroom you eat that kills you six days later and leaves no trace.
from Wikipedia:
Usually concussion symptoms go away without treatment,[54] and no specific treatment exists.[55] About one percent of people who receive treatment for MTBI need surgery for a brain injury.[43] Traditionally, concussion sufferers are prescribed rest,[55] including plenty of sleep at night plus rest during the day.[48] Health care providers recommend a gradual return to normal activities at a pace that does not cause symptoms to worsen.[48] Education about symptoms, how to manage them, and their normal time course can lead to an improved outcome.[13]
Medications may be prescribed to treat symptoms such as sleep problems and depression.[13] Analgesics such as ibuprofen can be taken for the headaches that frequently occur after concussion,[6] but paracetamol (acetaminophen) is preferred to minimize the risk for complications such as intracranial hemorrhage.[56] Concussed individuals are advised not to drink alcohol or take drugs that have not been approved by a doctor, as they could impede healing.[48]
Observation to monitor for worsening condition is an important part of treatment.[57] Health care providers recommend that those suffering from concussion return for further medical care and evaluation 24 to 72 hours after the concussive event if the symptoms worsen. Athletes, especially intercollegiate or professional athletes, are typically followed closely by team trainers during this period. But others may not have access to this level of health care and may be sent home with no medical person monitoring them unless the situation gets worse. Patients may be released from the hospital to the care of a trusted person with orders to return if they display worsening symptoms[8] or those that might indicate an emergent condition, like unconsciousness or altered mental status; convulsions; severe, persistent headache; extremity weakness; vomiting; or new bleeding or deafness in either or both ears.[58] Repeated observation for the first 24 hours after concussion is recommended; however it is not known whether it is necessary to wake the patient up every few hours.[8
FWIW, LF Lucas Duda has absolutely raked since his promotion to AAA. Coincidentally, he launched his 12 homer and drove in his 33rd, 34th, and 35th runs tonight, in his 36th AAA game.
36 G, 149 PA, .313/.376/.679, 11 2B, 1 3B, 12 HR, 35 RBI, 14 BB, 26 K
Duda will need to be placed on the Mets’ 40-man roster prior to the Rule V draft, as he will no longer be naturally protected. The way he’s hit over the last month has virtually assured that it’s a question of when he’s added, not if. I’d also say he’s a safe bet to be added and brought up when rosters expand in September (if not sooner). But if Bay takes longer than expected to come back from this, he’s another option.
