“Yankees C prospect Jesus Montero has little defensive ability and will likely end up as a 1B-DH, but impact bats like this simply do not come around often… As for Mets SS prospect Wilmer Flores, he’s an excellent prospect in his own right… Flores doesn’t have the thunder in his bat that Montero did, nor does he have as good an approach… I’m 100% sure Montero will mash. I’m only about 70% sure Flores will… If I were the Mets, I’d consider dealing Flores in the right package for a top starter. Montero? He would be untouchable in my mind.”

All the top starters that were available are gone so that point is moot.
Exactly..To move a player with the potential of Wilmer Flores for a reliever or 2nd tier starter would be foolish..
Of course you never know what can happen with these kids and he’s years away from making an impact so in the right deal he’s probably who Omar is centering any deal around
This guy already proved his ignorance by saying any prospect has a 100% chance of anything. Especially considering he isn’t very athletic and hasn’t played 1B he only has value to AL teams where he can DH. Maybe he’s the kind of player who doesn’t fit well into the DH mold and it will affect his batting. 100% chance? Ha, what a buffoon.
Mike Newman actually does a pretty amazing and thorough job covering the South Atlantic League. If you’re gonna write him off for using “100%” when it’s obvious he was just trying to get across that Montero has about as impressive a bat as you’re likely to see in the minors, well, that’s your loss. But I’d recommend at least checking out his website before dismissing what he has to say.
My opinion? If he actually DID know what he was talking about, he’d be an ACTUAL scout for a TEAM.
Could this be the 2011 lineup?
Reyes
Pagan
Wright
Ike
Bay
Capn Kirk
Reese Havens
Thole
Pitch
In that scenario have we traded Beltran for pitching?
Yes exactly…trade beltran and use that money for a big time starter this offseason.
I’ve always liked Pitch. Solid prospect. Where is he now, AA ball?
KIDDING!!
I think Beltran finishes his career here with Pegan in RF. Francoeur is a goner, either traded or non-tendered. Kirk is for 2012 (after Beltran departs). Havens is probably in the same boat as FMart right now, he needs to stay on the field and have a long stretch of health. So I don’t see him here next year at all.
“Beltran finishes career here” + “2012(after Beltran departs)” = you think Beltran’s career is over after 2011.
I think he has more in the tank than that. It’s doubtful it’ll be with us, but he can be productive for a few more years beyond 2011.
My bad, BKartch.
I meant to type “Beltran finishes his Mets contract here.”
* grabs more coffee here *
Okay, that makes more sense. I wasn’t sure if you were jumping on the Beltran is done bandwagon. lol
LOL, nah. I’ve always been a huge Beltran fan. I agree that he’s got something left, but for a bunch of reasons I don’t see the Mets bringing him back when his contract ends (think Boras, for one).
I think there’s an outside chance Beltran could be traded this August, and a reasonable chance he could be traded next July IF the Mets are out of it (assuming he’d waive his NTC if he were being sent to a contender). But otherwise, I agree that he’s likely to play out his contract here.
I think he meant that Beltran finishes his contract here and isn’t moved before it expires.
I think you might be jumping the gun again and you’re thinking 2012.
I should have mentioned, the reason there is no Beltran in this line up is that I would try to move him, free up his money and use that towards another number 1/2 starter so that our rotation would be…
Santana
Number 1/2
Niese
Pelfrey
Dickey
Im liking that rotation.
Give me a solid bullpen and Im ready.
Wow, with everyone trashing the mets prospects its no wonder why they can’t deal!
Trashing?
That article speaks very highly of Flores. A 70% chance for a prospect would be golden.
Seriously. According to Mike’s site, these are the top prospects he’s scouted. I have no problem with Flores’s position here, especially given who’s ahead of him.
1. Jason Heyward, OF, Braves
2. Mike Stanton, OF, Marlins
3. Jesus Montero, C, Yankees
4. Julio Teheran, SP, Braves
5. Tyler Matzek, SP, Rockies
6. Casey Kelly, SP, Red Sox
7. Travis D’Arnaud, C, Blue Jays
8. Wilmer Flores, SS, Mets
9. Nolan Arenado, 3B, Rockies
10. Logan Morrison, 1B, Marlins
Montero is 20-21 and Flores is still 18… Hard to make this comparison, no? Also, they play different positions– Montero being a catcher inflates his value. We don’t know where Flores wind up, but most people seem to say he will “outgrow” SS and be either a corner infielder or outfielder.
If we were leading the division, circumstances might have been different. My keeper list is: Flores, Niewenhuis, Mejia, Familia. I would consider trading Thole in the right deal, but not with Barajas hurt. I would consider trading F-Mart, but his value is low right now.
All in all, if we do make a deal, expect to see none of those names traded, IMO. It could be guys like Cohoon, Nick Evans, Valdespin, etc. etc. We could definitely get in the running for Lilly with a combination of lesser know guys, the lesser part depending upon how much of his contract we would be willing to pay…
I agree with everything you wrote except for Thole. The Mets have struggled for so long finding a fit at catcher and I think he’s pretty solid with the bat and defensively. I’d put him on my keeper list.
Agree about Thole. The catcher spot has been such a black hole for the Mets in terms of OBP the last few years. It’s time to stop relying on catching vets who are burned out by August if not sooner … or who simply can’t hit.
OR getting back-up catchers that they suddenly think will morph into solid starters (Schneider, Barajas, etc).
I’d put Havens on that list too. I’d wouldn’t trade Thole. There’s little depth at catcher in the system.
Sorry, just because he was being compared to the next babe ruth i jumped to a conclusion. Then again, all yankee prospects are great.
I don’t know how someone can be so sure Montero will “mash” since his 2010 season isn’t exactly “mashing.”
“Mashing” is Pujols or Cabrera. Montero may hit well in the majors but I would say it’s a long shot for him to hit like Pujols or Cabrera.
Even the no doubt about it guys are not sure things. Heck, Ryan Howard took awhile before the Phillies gave up on Thome. I’d say being ranked top 10 at 18, 19 is fairly impressive for Wilmer.
Perspective: Austin Kearns and Adam Dunn were rookies in the Reds’ minor system, they graduated together. Kearns was considered the better all around hitter and player, Dunn? oh, he’s got power, strikes out a lot and his fielding is a question mark. Years later, Kearns never lived up to expectations, and Dunn has what? 330 HRS?
Point is, you never know until they get to the show, everything is a whole lot of guess work.
