I’m growing slightly concerned with the direction of the Nationals, who are shaping up to have a really strong, young team in the coming years.
Updated at 1:04 pm:
Jon Heyman of SI.com says the D-Backs will get RHP prospect Daniel Hudson and David Holmberg from the White Sox.
There has been speculation that Jackson could be sent to the Nationals, with Adam Dunn going to the White Sox.

Don’t be concerned Matt. They are building solid team but it also helps that they have had the number 1 overall pick two years in a row with can’t miss prospects at the top each year.
Don’t be concerned. Whgen they are better than the Mets and the Marlins are better than the Mets maybe, just maybe the Mets will develop a plan for a long term future.
Nationals are going to trade Dunn for E. Jackson. Makes sense, they get Jackson and can still sign Dunn in the offseason.
I agree 100% that the Nats are moving towards being a force to be reckoned with in coming years. I had just mentioned that to a friend of mine.
This is an example of how organizations that have direction can improve. The Mets seem to never have a plan, or to be moving in one direction or another.
They are already a force to be reckoned with when they play the Mets. It’d be nice if they traded away Willingham to the AL.
They still have Chris Marrero in their farm system and he is still pretty young and doing ok in AA ball. I think they still believe he is the 1B of their future.
This is what happens when the GM as (cue dramatic music). . . .
A PLAN!
Are people really nervous because they are getting Jackson? In case you forgot, he is not a good pitcher. He is a #5 on most teams.
He’s not having a great year, but last year he was very good. 13-9, 1.26 WHIP, 3.62 ERA for a lousy Detroit team. The year before, he was 14-11 with a 1.51 WHIP (which is high) but only a 4.42 ERA on Tampa. He can be a middle of the rotation guy.
Jackson has an ERA of 5.16 this year (87 ERA+) in 134 IP. His WHIP is 1.496. Career wise his ERA / ERA+ WHIP are 4.74 / 94 / 1.511. His ERA in 200+ AAA IP was 6.45 (2004 and 2005). He has had one good season (2009) since 2004. He is steady, a #4/5 at best. He is not going to make or break any team and if they get Dunn straight up for him then the Nats got rooked.
Take away his no-hitter and look at his numbers. Frightening.
If the White Sox don’t have a deal in the mix for him this is a terrible trade. They just traded for essentially the worst starter in the NL that hasn’t been yanked from the rotation on the worst team in the NL. How does getting a guy who leads the NL in earned runs allowed really help your team? I think he also leads the NL in wild pitches.
I really thought they were going to keep Hudson and use him as their 5 for the rest of the year.
He was even bad in the no hitter. He needed 150 pitches and walked 8. It just happened he got the lucky break every time he worked himself into trouble. Not sure about the White Sox prospects but the Sox may have got robbed as ell.
Hudson was their best major league ready pitching prospect. They said when Peavy went down he was going to fill the slot. He didn’t pitch well in a few starts in the majors.
Still seems like a reach.
Growing up in NYC as a Rangers fan, I always thought the Islanders got it right because they could get it right. They were awful, then great in the 80′s becuase seemingly all of their draft picks were great, in part, because they stunk so much they were drafting so high so often.
What the Nats are doing reminds me of the Islanders. Now let’s see if it translates to success.
What I don’t want the Mets to do is apply the FA band-aid approach. That rarely lasts long, unless you’re the Yanks and every year you can spend, spend, spend.
Build from within, have patience, the Mets have solid pieces in places. Concentrate on starting pitching, centerfielders and catchers. The latter two can always shift positions or become valuable pieces to trade.
what ever happened with wang
unrelated, MLBTR says we traded Jacobs to the Jays for a player to be named… non-event but there’s our first deadline move.
Then Milbury took over the Islanders and dealt away most of the young talent LOL. You could have put together a starting All-Star lineup for both conferences with the players Milbury traded away.
