Steve Phillips on Mets Business Model

Today on WFAN, former Mets GM Steve Phillips explained that Mets Ownership does not operate the team in hopes of making a profit – despite what most fans think.

Www.google.com 2010-8-2 14-23Instead, he said, Ownership begins each year intending to break even – knowing they will be profitable should the team contend for or make it in to the post season.

The Yankees, on the other hand, repeatedly operate at a loss, regardless of contending for a World Series, something most teams and investors will not tolerate.

Nevertheless, Phillips said Mets Ownership might need to consider overspending, like the Yankees, by releasing and replacing players such Luis Castillo and Oliver Perez, which might mean losing money over the course of one or two seasons, all in an effort to bring in new talent, change the team dynamic and revitalize the fanbase, so they can make more money in the long run.
