Mets make offer Oliver Perez CAN refuse
In the Daily News, Andy Martino quotes two sources who say the Mets have stopped asking Oliver Perez to accept a minor-league assignment, since the pitcher continues to reject their request.
The Mets are 6–14 in their last 20 games.
The way I see it, if a similar pace continues, and the team totally falls out of contention, they may as well keep Perez around to see if he can do something, anything, to increase his trade value, which, even in a best case scenario, will be limited, but at least it will be something.
I mean, this winter, he will have one year and $12 million left on his deal. I have to think the Mets could eat a big chunk of that and find at least some team interested in swapping headaches, since Perez is still – at minimum – a 29–year-old, left-handed pitcher… assuming they do not just want to cut bait and get nothing in return.
However, if the Mets catch a hot streak and pull close in either playoff race, and Perez’s spot is needed for someone who can actually throw the baseball, then he needs to be sent packing… and quick.
