Post Game: Mets 1, Phillies 0

by Michael Baron on August 7th, 2010 at 9:49 pm

The Mets shutout the Phillies by the score of 1-0 tonight at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.

The Mets shutout the Phillies for the fourth time this season, and pulled back to .500 at 55-55 on the year.

The Least You Should Know:

  • Johan Santana started for the Mets and was brilliant tonight, not allowing a hit for the first 5 2/3 innings and left with the lead intact with one out in the eighth inning.
  • Jeff Francoeur gave the Mets the lead with an opposite field solo home run in the seventh inning.
  • Francisco Rodriguez recorded a five out save despite walking the tightrope once again after loading the bases in the eighth inning.
  • Tonight was the first 1-0, nine inning victory for the Mets this season, although they were 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.

Naturally, Santana’s sixth inning was prolonged with a strike out and a wild pitch to Raul Ibanez, and then Placido Polanco broke up his no-hitter with a single to centerfield. Meet the Mets.

I don’t think I’ll ever understand why Jerry Manuel asks Angel Pagan, his most consistent hitter this year, to give himself up with Jose Reyes on first as much as he does – I’d like to see Reyes get himself into scoring position by stealing with more frequency, and then have Pagan try and drive him in.

By the way, Ruben Tejada‘s return paid off in a big way tonight – there were numerous plays, including a great running catch up the middle in the ninth inning, that Tejada made which just wouldn’t have been made if either Alex Cora or Luis Castillo were out there, and that was a clear cut difference in this game.

Game Ball:

Goes to Johan Santana for 7 1/3 brilliant innings and a much needed win.
