Newsday: Wilpon fired Vince Coleman, why not K-Rod?
Steven Marcus from Newsday makes an interesting point, in that the Mets basically axed Vince Coleman for throwing a firecracker at someone in 1993, suspending him for the rest of that season and it was a strong and decisive move by the same ownership.
I have to think the fact the Mets inability to void the contract under these terms and the money that is still outstanding has a lot to do with the fact Rodriguez is still a Met. Given how the Mets have shown no willingness to eat either Oliver Perez‘s or Luis Castillo‘s contract, why should we expect anything different with Rodriguez’s contract?
Then again, from a baseball standpoint, Coleman was not exactly great for the Mets back in 1993, whereas Rodriguez has been pretty good so far for the Mets, and they supposedly did seek a harsher punishment than Rodriguez ultimately received.
Rodriguez is in the second year of a three year, $37 million contract, with the remainder of his $11.5 million salary due to him this season, $11.5 million next season, and if he finishes 55 games in 2011 and 100 games combined between 2010 and 2011, his $17.5 million option automatically vests for 2012.
