SI: Mets are Baseball’s Worst Franchise
“No, the 2010 Mets are simply worthless. They are a listless, heartless, wretched baseball team; an entertainment value sans entertainment, playing ugly within the confines of beautiful new Citi Field. When the biggest story of the year is Francisco Rodriguez, your star closer, beating up the grandfather of his kids, well, you’ve for problems.”
Jeff Pearlman, Sports Illustrated
Wow – Pearlman’s making a pretty strong indictment. I don’t know if I’d consider Angel Pagan a fourth outfielder and Jon Niese reminding him of Joe Price as Pearlman suggests, but other than that, he makes some sobering points about the Mets.
At any rate, the season has been gut wrenching, frustrating, up and down to say the least, and there have been A LOT of distractions, especially lately between the legal matters and players being unhappy with their roles, among other things.
That said, I want to believe that with all of the negativity that has surrounded the Mets lately, there is light at the end of the tunnel, and I think the continued development of their prospects and minor league system is essentially that light.
There are no guarantees of course – Jenrry Mejia might turn into the top-of-the-rotation starter the Mets envision he will be, or he might not. Ike Davis might become a perrenial 35 home run guy, or he might not, and either way, their problems won’t be solved by simply investing in their minor league system.
Like I said yesterday here, it’s up to the Mets, and only the Mets to right this ship, separate the past from the present in order to get the media and the fans to stop talking about the two collapses in 2007 and 2008, and straighten their organization out from top to bottom. As a fan, I’m so tired of being reminded of what happened two and three years ago, and I’m tired of the negativity in general, but I will continue to have those images in my head until the Mets change that for me, and I think that could be said for a lot of other fans too.
I just want the Mets to win, and not drag the drama and the negativity around with them.
