Amazin Ave: Wally Backman is a Bad Idea
This is a must-read post from James Kannengieser… nice work.
I don’t know enough about Wally Backman, one way or the other, to agree or
disagree with whether he’d be a successful major-league manager. I do know
there are plenty of managers with extensive minor-league experience who do
terrible in the big leagues, others who do well… and I’ve seen people like
Willie Randolph, who had ZERO managerial experience, take a team to the NLCS in
his second season, but then grow paranoid and be fired.
In the end, to me, it’s most important to pick a manager who will work well
with the talent on the roster… the manager and players MUST be on the same page,
in terms of how they view the game and how they work towards a goal.
