Essential Jerry After Last Night’s Win

by Michael Baron on August 28th, 2010 at 7:52 am

After last night’s 2-1 win over the Astros, Jerry Manuel addressed reporters, and essentially said the following:

  • Manuel felt Bobby Parnell had some success against the Astros last week, and thought it was a favorable match-up in the ninth inning, and he provides an option to Hisanori Takahashi in the ninth inning.
  • If Parnell had been smoother, Manuel would have let him try and finish the ninth inning.
  • Manuel was impressed with Pelfrey’s ability to push through the eighth inning.
  • Manuel’s not concerned with Pelfrey’s recent pitch counts being high.
  • Part of the motive to give Pelfrey the extra two days rest this week was to keep him from facing the Marlins, who he’s struggled against this year.
  • Regarding the center field situation, Manuel still feels they are stronger defensively with Angel Pagan in left field, as he gives them “coverage in left field in a big ballpark” and feels Pagan is getting more comfortable in left field.
  • Manuel thinks Carlos Beltran‘s legs feel ok, and is seeing a lot of positive signs with him.
