Who is Joaquin Arias?

According to Jon Heyman from SI.com, the Mets and Rangers are discussing a trade that would send Jeff Francoeur to Texas in exchange for 25–year-old SS Joaquin Arias, who was designated for assignment last week.

AriasIn 101 plate appearances for the Rangers this season, the 25–year-old Arias has just two walks, while batting .276 with no home runs and just 6 extra base hits, though he has played first base, second base and shortstop.

He’s an interesting player, more or less a utility infielder.  Basically, he’s quick.  He’s quick in the field, with good range and a good arm, he’s quick on the bases and, for better or worse, he’s quick at the plate… and so he can also be very undisciplined and kind of reckless, such as swinging at lots of pitches and botching routine plays in the field, while making unbelievable stops at the same time.

This week, in a chat for MLB.com, Texas beat reporter TR Sullivan said:

“There is absolutely no way Arias should be back with the Rangers next season. The club’s confidence in him is dwindling rapidly, and he seems like he needs to go somewhere else to succeed.”
