News: Jenrry Mejia Will Start Saturday

by Michael Baron on September 1st, 2010 at 3:56 pm

The Mets announced that Jenrry Mejia will start Saturday’s game against the Cubs in Chicago.

And so, it’s official.

Mejia, who allowed a run on five hits and struck out nine in eight innings on Monday for Triple-A Buffalo, will apparently be taking Pat Misch‘s spot in the rotation.

I’m kind of up and down on this – on the one hand, I’m curious as to how he will pitch and how he will respond as a starter in the big leagues. I’m interested in seeing his stuff, especially the development of the off-speed pitches.

On the other hand, part of me thinks the Mets are rushing this a bit, and maybe he should get another couple of starts in the minors before being thrown into the fire. He’s just coming back from a shoulder problem, and while it was clearly mild, I don’t think the Mets have anything to lose by letting him enjoy some success in the minors for a little while longer.

I feel like I said the same thing back in February, March, April, and May.
