Today’s Starter, Jenrry Mejia

by Michael Baron on September 4th, 2010 at 6:57 am

Jenrry Mejia is making his first big league appearance since pitching in relief for the Mets in a loss to the Yankees on June 20.

Prior to being sent to the minors to build arm strength as a starting pitcher, Mejia had gone 0-2 with a 3.25 ERA in 30 relief appearances for the Mets.

He was very impressive as a starter in the minor leagues this year. However, while I am excited and intrigued by his start today, he had just nine starts combined at all levels in the minor leagues, and had some minor shoulder trouble in between, and so I would like to have seen the Mets give him as many minor league starts as possible before being promoted to the big leagues so he could continue to not just build that arm strength and further grasp command of his off-speed pitches but also learn and enjoy more success.

That said, here we are, and the Mets pitching gem is making his first big league start today. Despite my concerns, I am looking forward to today.
