Quote: Ron Darling on the Mets Way

by Matthew Cerrone on October 6th, 2010 at 7:40 pm

“When was the last time you head someone say: “I know what it means to wear a Mets uniform. I know how to play the Mets way”? They need to teach smart baseball and good defense so when you get to the big leagues, you know what is expected of you. Right now the Mets can look at the players you have as they move up to each level and try to build a perennial winner in a few years, or you can try to piecemeal it together, trying to find the elixir in the free-agent market.”

~ Ron Darling, Oct. 6 Q&A with New York Times

I said it yesterday, just like Darling today, and I’ll probably keep saying it over and over again this off season, “I want a GM who will create the Mets Way of doing things, so that every employee and every fan knows what to expect.”

It just seems important, particularly in this market, that all fans and all employees have an idea of what the Mets are about, to keep things tight and moving in the same direction.  It can help guide decisions, and calm nerves.  The Twins have a way.  The A’s have a way.  The Yankees definitely have a way, and every one of their fans will remind you of it.  The Red Sox had a way, as did the Dodgers, but both franchises seem to be losing it.

Basically, it’s more of a business and marketing thing, than it is about wins and losses, at least at first, but it could help to bond players as well.  Basically, it’s something to cling to in tough times.  The Mets need one, and I’m hoping the next GM and manager can help establish it.
