The Interview Process for Manager

by Matthew Cerrone on November 2nd, 2010 at 9:43 am

The Mets are telling reporters that they have not yet scheduled any interviews, as they begin their search to find a new manager.

However, I do believe the process of reaching out to candidates has started.

According to Andy Martino of the Daily News:

”When the interview process begins, perhaps this week, Wally Backman will be considered, as will third base coach Chip Hale. Other internal candidates could include Ken Oberkfell, Bob Melvin and Terry Collins, and the Mets have discussed Clint Hurdle, Lee Mazzilli, Pete Mackanin, Don Wakamatsu and many others. Alderson said Friday that he would like to hire a manager within 30 days.”

In talking to people in baseball these past few days, the guys who seem to evoke the most positive reaction are: Backman, Collins and Hurdle.  I have no idea what that means to Sandy Alderson, other than these men get the most praise, at least from people I have talked to about the rumored candidates.

This past weekend, in the Bergen Record, Klapisch said Backman will fly in for an interview this week.

“Backman was on Alderson’s original list of candidates that he submitted to the Wilpons – and that was before he was hired.”

To learn why Mark Healey wants the Mets to select Backman, check out the latest Gotham Nation podcast, featuring audio from Backman during an appearance on Healey’s show a few years ago.
