Fernando Martinez Feeling Good, Will Not Return to DWL
According to ESPN New York, Mets prospect Fernando Martinez took batting practice yesterday in the Dominican Republic, and said he felt no pain during the session, although the Mets have told him he will not return to Los Leones de Escogido this winter.
Martinez was diagnosed with arthritis in his right knee after undergoing an MRI in New York last month.
“I feel a lot better after that small problem last week. I went to New York to check myself out. I feel very well.” he told ESPN New York.
The only thing holding this kid back are the injuries. He has a world of talent, and in the times I’ve watched him play, everything appears effortless to him on the field. If he could just stay healthy and get his career on track, I think he could be a major contributor to the Mets in the not too distant future. He’s still very young, and so I believe there is time for him to get himself back on course, and with his value as low as it is on the trade market, the Mets don’t have anything to lose by waiting him out and hope he can live up to the expectations.
The 22 year old Martinez says he has been riding a bike for 30 minutes a day to try and build strength around the knee, and believes he is three weeks away from running.
Martinez appeared in just seven games for the Mets in 2010, and had just 3 hits in 22 at bats with two RBI.
