Sandy Alderson on the Long Term Contract
“The big-revenue teams make deals like [those signed by Carl Crawford and Jayson Werth] and then take themselves out of the market either for the remainder of the current year or for future years…We’ll see where it’s going.”
~ Sandy Alderson, as quoted by David Lennon of Newsday
In listening to Alderson since he came on board, I get the feeling that with rare exception, he will look to avoid signing contracts for more than four or five years, for the reasons he described above although under the right circumstances, he will if he has to based on market conditions.
For more on this, check out what I wrote yesterday with regards to Alderson’s plan and payroll flexibility.
