Mets Value DIPS, LIPS, and SAT Scores
Mets GM Sandy Alderson has an undergraduate from Dartmouth and a law degree from Harvard. Assistant GM Paul DePodesta has an undergraduate degree from Harvard.
Chris Capuano, whom the Mets signed earlier this week, was Phi Beta Kappa from Duke University, and Chris Young, who Waldstein expects the Mets to make an offer “soon”, was a politics major at Princeton.
Certainly from a pitching perspective, I could understand the value of having superior intellects on the mound. Talent is one thing, but the game, especially the art of pitching is so mental, and one’s ability to understand how to pitch is what ultimately makes a pitcher successful. I think there are numerous examples, such as Greg Maddux, of guys who didn’t have the raw talent as some other pitchers have had, yet they have had the ability to out wit the opponent on the field, and in Maddux’s case, dominate with that wit.
I’m not sure having phi beta kappa credentials or a top 10 school degree is what Alderson’s group is absolutely looking for. Alderson has said numerous times this winter statistical analysis is a key element in evaluating talent, but also it’s clear the entire makeup of a player is a key element as well.
