Buzz: Phillies, Among Others, Interested in John Maine

by Michael Baron on January 12th, 2011 at 3:40 pm

In a post to ESPN New York, Adam Rubin says the Phillies “have had discussions about adding John Maine to their depth of starters.”

According to Rubin, Maine’s agent, Rex Gary, says there’s “a lot of interest” in Maine, who was non-tendered by the Mets last month.

Maine made just nine starts for the Mets in 2010, going 1-3 with a 6.13 ERA in 39 2/3 innings, walking 25 and allowing eight home runs over that span. Maine was removed from a game against the Nationals on May 20 after making just five pitches and being deemed unable to compete by both Dan Warthen and Jerry Manuel, and was placed on the disabled list two days later. He underwent shoulder surgery on July 23 to clean out scar tissue from his right throwing shoulder.
