Terry Collins with Mike Francesa on WFAN

by Michael Baron on January 19th, 2011 at 2:45 pm

This afternoon on WFAN, Mets manager Terry Collins was a guest of Mike Francesa, and spoke about a variety of topics, basically saying the following:

  • He wants to run camp efficiently – at the end of the day, he wants his players to do the maximum amount of work possible, but in an organized and disciplined time.
  • During Spring Training, the veteran hitters will get around 70 at bats, and says the pitchers will typically need two games spanning five to seven innings a piece, for a total of 30 innings pitched.
  • He’s HUGE on fundamentals, “because that’s how you play the game.”
  • Collins will sit down with Carlos Beltran when he arrives in Port St. Lucie and come up with a game plan – he will have an opportunity to prove his knee is healthy and play centerfield, but the situation will be resolved, one way or the other, after 10-12 games in Spring Training.
  • He feels Luis Castillo is among those fighting to win the second base job, as he says he’s determined to be in much better shape this year.
  • Regarding Castillo and Oliver Perez, their contract status will have no impact on whether or not to break camp with them.
  • Jose Reyes will leadoff, but he feels Angel Pagan is the best fit to bat second, as he’s someone who has the patience to take pitches and give Reyes a chance to run and “do his thing”.
  • He doesn’t see any reason R.A. Dickey can’t repeat his production from last year, as he has the ability to throw the knuckle ball with a lot of velocity, and it’s hard to prepare for that.
  • He’s looking forward to the competition between Chris Young, Chris Capuano, and Dillon Gee for the fourth and fifth spots in the rotation, but did NOT mention Oliver Perez among the candidates.
  • He says Francisco Rodriguez realizes the mistakes he’s made and is willing to stand up to them. The other players realize the altercation from last summer is in the past, and they’ll accept him back.
  • About the “Hallmark” and brand of the Mets, he says the Mets are a team which is built around speed, and will run the bases. They are not going to beat themselves.
