Quote: Daniel Murphy Primed for Spring Training
“Any time you kind of get something stolen from you, it makes you appreciate it a little more…Since the day I got hit, June 2, I’ve been excited for spring training to start.”
~ Daniel Murphy, as quoted by Kevin Kernan of the NY Post
Murphy, who last year was slated to be the Opening Day first baseman before injuring his knee in the final week of Spring Training, is competing with Brad Emaus, Justin Turner, and at this point, Luis Castillo for the second base job. He missed all of last season after re-injuring his knee in a rehab game.
One of the things I like about Murphy is he’s a hard worker, and dedicated to being the best defensive player he can be, even if the end result isn’t great. He’s done everything the organization has asked him to do – shift from third base to the outfield, then to first base and now to second base, all in a three year period.
He was one of the first players to arrive in Port St. Lucie during voluntary workouts this past week, and according to Kernan, he is starting to feel more “comfortable” at second base. I am looking forward to watching his progress this Spring.
