Sandy Alderson talked by phone tonight with a select group of fan bloggers.

Alderson talked to use for roughly 40 minutes, and basically said:

  • Fan sentiment played a part in how he viewed the decision to release Luis Castillo. It did not play a part in releasing Oliver Perez, ‘whose performance just wasn’t there to make it a close decision.’
  • If the Mets are playing well and contending for a playoff spot this summer, there will be money in the budget to acquire additional players.
  • The Mets farm system does not get the credit it deserves, because they have graduated so many players (like Josh Thole, Ike Davis and Bobby Parnell) over the last few years.
  • Matt Harvey has pitched very well this spring.
  • He is happy with the state of the farm system, but feels the team must be more aggressive in building through the draft.
  • Spring Training is a small sample size and it shouldn’t be the only factor in who makes the team.
  • Pedro Beato has improved a lot since the beginning of camp.
  • Yes, he expected it to take a while for the team to identify a second baseman.
  • He is happy that Brad Emaus has started to show what he is capable of doing at the plate over the last few days.
  • There is a good chance he keeps Emaus and Beato, because they are Rule 5 picks.
  • The team has depth in the bullpen. However, when you consider who has options, who doesn’t, and who can opt out, that depth vanishes immediately.
  • Jose Reyes is a very dynamic player.
  • Reyes is working to improve his On Base Percentage.
  • “Even if there were a reduced payroll, it wouldn’t preclude us from signing Reyes.”
  • The legal situation with Ownership has not yet had an impact on the on-field product. “Will it in the future? Who knows?”
  • Nick Evans has an opportunity to make the 25-man roster, with or without Carlos Beltran starting the season on the disabled list.

By the way, when it got to my turn to ask the final question, instead of taking my line off mute, I hung up. Doh!
