The Least You Should Know:
- The Mets’ power onslaught continued with three more home runs today, two of which came off the bat of David Wright.
- Jason Pridie deposited the first home run of his Major League career into the Mets bullpen in the third. Pridie’s three-run homer was the Mets first three-run blast of the season.
- Wright’s multi-homer game was the 16th of his career, tied for third on the Mets franchise list with Carlos Beltran. The teammates now trail only Darryl Strawberry (22) and Dave Kingman (17) in that department.
- Jon Niese (1-3) became the third Mets pitcher in four games to throw seven innings. Niese allowed only six hits, three runs, two earned and two walks in seven innings of work to pick up his first win of the season.
- Ike Davis went 2-3 with a pair of walks and now has a seven game hitting streak, over the course of which he is hitting .385 (10-26) with three doubles, three home runs and 7 RBI.
- The Mets bullpen was touched up for a run for the first time in four games, as the D-Backs got to D.J. Carrasco for one in the eighth. But Tim Byrdak was called upon and retired the next two batters, quickly extinguishing the Arizona threat.
- The win gave the Mets a four game winning streak and a winning record (4-2) for the homestand.
Terry Collins Post-Game Comments:
Terry Collins spoke to the media after today’s win. During the discussion, Collins basically said:
- Wright’s first home run was a laser, but he was surprised that his second home run got out of the park and thought the warm waether contributed to the ball carrying better.
- Collins thinks the club’s two-out hitting and their ability to tack on runs have been reasons the team has seen improved results.
- He’ll meet with Sandy Alderson to discuss the fate of Dillion Gee later today.
- He said Wright is a “tireless worker” who doesn’t let anything stand in his way of succeeding and pushes himself hard in the cage, particularly when he’s struggling.
- Collins said he’d like to work Scott Hairston and Willie Harris into centerfield when the team hits the road this week.
- One of the reasons Hairston hasn’t seen the lineup yet is that he’s been suffering from back stiffness after crashing into the wall Tuesday night against Houston.
- He believes Wright slugging three home runs at home this week will definitely add to his confidence in his ability to hit home runs at Citi Field.
- Collins thought Niese stayed within himself nicely, keeping control of his pace on the mound and making sure he avoided the big inning.
- He thinks Beltran’ swing from the left side is much better and he’s not seeing Beltran favor his knee when he swings left handed.
- He’s anxious to get on the road this week and see how the team responses to the six divisional games against the Nationals and Phillies.
Quick Post-Game Reaction:
- These four games were just what the doctor ordered for the Mets. They desperately needed to go out, flex their offensive muscles, start pitching to the ballpark and win some games in front of the home crowd.
- Baseball is a game of trends. Four games is undoubtedly a small sample size, but the trends we’ve seen since things bottomed out Wednesday night have been exceedingly positive. Let’s hope the kind of execution that’s been on display to close out the homestand is contagious.
- Wright’s swing has been excellent since breaking out of his 0-20 slump. As we’ve seen over the past four games, if David stays short, the power will come.
- Remember: you can only beat who you play. Eighteen runs in three games against the league’s worst staff is the kind of the situation this team needs to take advantage of if they’re going to hang around in the Wild Card race.
