Q&A: John Franco talks bullpen, leadership, HOF

by Brian Erni on June 24th, 2011 at 10:33 am

Yesterday, former Mets captain John Franco was at the ballpark as part of Citi’s third-annual Citi Field Kids program.

Franco and SNY anchor Michelle Yu shared inspirational stories with a group of middle and high school-aged children, who toured the Jackie Robinson Rotunda and the Mets Hall of Fame before the game.

I had a chance to chat with Franco afterwards, during which he basically said:

  • He thinks the Mets bullpen has done a nice job thus far this year, noting that Jason Isringhausen has solidified the eighth inning.
  • There may be one or two players in the Mets clubhouse right now that could take the reins as the next official captain.
  • He thinks that the Hall of Fame voters have yet to properly recognize closers and that the position should be held in a higher regard.
