  • The Mets tied the game off Mariano Rivera with a two out walk to Jason Bay, a single from Lucas Duda, and an RBI single from Ronny Paulino, and then Ruben Tejada grounded one to Ramiro Pena who booted the ball, and upon trying to score, Duda was thrown out at the plate by Brett Gardner.

Quick Post Game Thoughts:

What an emotional rollercoaster this game was. The Mets got next to nothing going for the the first 26 2/3 innings in this series, and then their offense came alive for the first time with two outs and nobody on in the ninth inning today. They exercised great patience against Rivera, who has a career 2.22 ERA by the way, and got him to crack in an opportunity to sweep and hand the Mets collective butts to them.

In that ninth inning, it seemed the Mets were on the edge of having things spiral out of control this season. But they showed a lot of guts in a real big spot, and found a way to rise to the occasion and come away with a huge win. At first, I couldn’t understand why Chip Hale sent Duda in the to try and score the winning run. But in thinking about the play again, I liked the aggressiveness, forcing a good throw in an unlikely rally against the best closer ever. Gardner has a bad arm, and it was probably a good risk to take in that situation – it just didn’t work out.

It would be unfair to talk about that ninth inning without mentioning Paulino’s huge RBI single against Rivera. Considering Rivera’s cutter and how a lot of switch hitters hit from the right side against him, it was almost like he was hitting against a left handed pitcher in that situation, which he always crushes. He did a great job in that spot, and got his biggest hit as a Met today to tie the game in the most unlikely of scenarios.

It’s interesting how well the Yankees and their pitchers were able to execute sacrifice bunts in this series – they were successful on four different occasions, which helped them to score runs. It would be nice to see the Mets pitchers execute more consistently in those situations, especially when there aren’t very many ways for them to score runs.

It’s never a good thing when a team needs to get four innings out of their bullpen, especially when the opposing team is the Yankees. It’s especially difficult when runs are few and far between, and there is absolutely no margin for error, which is exactly where the Mets are right now. But like I said, they hung in today and showed some spunk. If it was 2010, I’m not sure this club has the ability to win this kind of game.

The Mets have a long plane ride tonight, but despite the lost series, I’m sure it will be an upbeat flight considering the quality of this win, and the fairly positive news with Jose Reyes.
