Jose Reyes to the DL, Nick Evans recalled

The Mets have placed Jose Reyes on the 15 day disabled list with a strained left hamstring, retroactive to July 3.

To replace Reyes on the roster, the Mets recalled Nick Evans from Triple-A Buffalo.

Evans was with the Mets earlier this season from May 18-June 10, going 0-12 with five walks. Evans was hitting .329 (74-225) with 28 runs scored, 13 doubles, seven home runs and 29 RBI in 57 games with the Bisons. He had a 19-game hitting streak from May 12-June 29, batting .514 (38-74) during that span.

Opinion added by Matthew Cerrone:

Ted and I talked about this on today’s Baseball Show, which will post to MetsBlog around 4 pm, but, though I don’t think this specific injury will do anything to impact Jose’s price tag this winter, I wonder if it will motivate him to work out an extension with the Mets now, sooner than later. I doubt it. But, the bet for him was always whether to play out the year, in fear of injury, for the bigger pay day in a few months… now, here he is, on the DL and I wonder if it’s giving him pause.

Original Post, 1:39 PM:

Jose Reyes injured his left hamstring running out an infield hit in the first inning of last Saturday’s loss to the Yankees.

He underwent an MRI on Sunday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan to examine the degree of the injury, and it was determined by doctors to be a grade one hamstring, which is the least severe.

Yesterday in Los Angeles, Sandy Alderson told reporters that Reyes agents wanted the doctor who performed Reyes’ hamstring surgery in 2009 to examine the MRI and it’s report. Reyes has been taking ground balls and batting practice since the injury but has not attempted to run since.
