The Least You Should Know:

  • Chris Capuano started for the Mets and pitched well into the sixth inning, allowing two runs and six hits to earn his 11th win of the season.
  • David Wright had a huge night, hitting two home runs and driving in five. It was his 17th multi-home run game of his career, tying him for second place in team history with Carlos Beltran and Mike Piazza.
  • Lucas Duda had four hits, an RBI, and three runs scored as part of a 20 hit attack by the Mets.
  • Wright, Jose Reyes, Nick Evans and Josh Thole each had three hits, and Jason Bay made a great catch to rob Alex Gonzalez of a home run in the fourth inning.
  • Reyes raised his average to .334 for the year, four points ahead of Ryan Braun for the batting title.
  • The Mets bullpen allowed only a walk in four innings of relief.
  • Tonight marked the first time the Mets have had more than nine runs in a game since August 6 against the Braves.
  • The Mets scored as many runs tonight as they’ve scored in their previous five games and their 12 runs is a franchise record at Turner Field.

Post Game Thoughts:

This was the type of game the Mets needed – a laugher in THEIR favor. They were firing on all cylinders and, for a change, set and controlled the tone right from the beginning with a four run first inning.

I like what I’m seeing in the battery of Capuano and Thole. They appear to have a good rhythm together and Capuano seems to trust Thole’s game calling. It was a shame Capuano’s night ended in the sixth inning after Nick Evans booted a groundball and Capuano issued a walk, but Capuano has put together three excellent starts out of his last five and showing he can potentially be a serviceable piece to the back end of the rotation going forward.

The way I saw things, the situation could not have gotten worse for Wright, and so he had nowhere to go but up, and he took huge strides in getting his game back on track tonight. It was also nice to see him smiling in the dugout, as that has eluded him for most of the season.

With the Cardinals beating the Phillies tonight and the Mets blowing out the Braves, I can’t help but think about all of those long and painful seasons the Braves had spent killing the Mets playoff and championship hopes. It feels kind of good to pay them back a little bit tonight. Hopefully they can continue paying them back tomorrow and Sunday…
