AFL Round Up: Juan Lagares has been stellar this fall

In the Arizona Fall League, Mets prospects have been playing for the Peoria Javelinas under manager Pedro Lopez. Here is a round up of their performances so far:

  • OF Juan Lagares has been an elite performer throughout the league so far this fall. He’s hit .364 with with a .989 OPS for Peoria with four doubles, a triple, two home runs and 17 RBI in 55 at bats. This comes off a stellar season between Single-A St. Lucie and Double-A Binghamton in which he hit a combined .349 with 26 doubles, nine home runs and 71 RBI in 120 games.
  • 2B Wilfredo Tovar has had a nice fall season for Peoria, hitting .291 with a home run and eight RBI in 21 games, and he’s hit .289 in his last ten games with four multiple hit games over that span. The 20 year old Tovar played for the Savannah Sand Gnats in the South Atlantic League this past season, hitting .251 with a .318 on base percentage.
  • C Juan Centeno has had an inconsistent fall season with Peoria although he’s hit .303 over his last ten games. He’s hit .250 with a .340 on base percentage and five RBI in 13 games this fall.
  • 23 year old RHP Taylor Whitenton has struggled in his eight relief appearances, pitching to a 5.79 ERA, walking nine batters in 14 innings over that span. He was stellar for the Sand Gnats this past season, going 5-5 with a 2.49 ERA in 26 games and 22 starts in 2011.
  • RHP Robert Carson has also struggled so far for Peoria, pitching to a 4.41 ERA in nine relief appearances. Carson, who will be 23 in January, went 4-11 with a 5.05 ERA for Double-A Binghamton this past season.
  • Continuing the theme of inconsistent pitching, RHP Collin McHugh has been disappointing this fall, going 1-3 with an 8.06 ERA in seven games and six starts for Peoria. He’s allowed 37 hits and nine walks in only 22 1/3 innings. He split his time between Double-A Binghamton and Single-A St. Lucie this past season, going a combined 9-4 with a 3.84 ERA in 27 games and 22 starts.
  • Lastly, LHP Erik Turgeon has put forth the strongest pitching performance of any Met prospect so far this fall, going 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA in ten relief appearances for Peoria. Turgeon, who turns 25 in March, went a combined 5-4 with a 5.42 ERA in 52 relief appearances between Triple-A Buffalo and Double-A Binghamton in 2011.
