Mets likely to non-tender Paulino, focused on infielders

CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman says the Mets intend to non-tender Ronny Paulino before tonight’s deadline.

According to Heyman, Mike Nickeas could end up being the team’s back up catcher next season. Why? Heyman says the the Mets are finding the market for free-agent catchers to be too expensive, and they are more focused on acquiring an infielder (such as Jack Wilson).

Last month, Heyman said the Mets, Dodgers and Braves are among teams with interest in Wilson, which was confirmed by his agent in the New York Post.

Wilson, 34, hit just .243 with a .274 OBP and just 9 extra base hits in 79 games between the Braves and Mariners last season.

Matthew Cerrone: It isn’t surprising to hear the Mets are leaning toward non-tendered Paulino, as was mentioned this morning. The way I understand it, the goal for catcher is to find a good, defensive back-up, who can throw out runners, hit left-handed pitching.

In regards to Wilson, he isn’t much of a hitter, and that’s putting it lightly. However, he still plays an outstanding infield. He can play shortstop and second base, and even played four games at third last season. I highly doubt the Mets see him as a starter over Ruben Tejada or Daniel Murphy. That said, he could give them an additional option in Spring and someone who would be a decent defensive replacement and bench player.

Speaking of middle infield, last week, Heyman said the Cardinals are likely to non-tender Ryan Theriot. He believes the Mets, Braves, Astros, Reds, Blue Jays and Royals are teams who may have interest in him.
