Wilmer Flores is back in action in VWL

Mets 20-year-old SS prospect Wilmer Flores is batting .271 with a .333 OBP, 5 extra base hits, 9 walks and 16 strike outs in 96 at bats in the Venezuelan Winter League.

The Mets purchased his contract in mid-November, adding him to the 40-man roster, which protected him from being selected by another team in last week’s Rule 5 Draft.

“His best tool is by far his bat, and he shows extra-base ability that should continue to develop as he progresses,” MiLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo said in November, when he ranked Wilmer as the team’s best position prospect. “Most feel he won’t be a shortstop long-term, but he might have enough bat to play third in the future.”

Toby Hyde: It’s been a start-and-stop season for Flores on the Bravos. He didn’t play at all for a pair of eight-day stretches, both in mid-November and early December. However, he saw action at second base in three straight games over the weekend and went 8-for-15 with a pair of doubles. He’s played in just three games at shortstop, while spending most of his time at second and third.
